Mikel Arteta has made a bizarre Liverpool Premier League title reference when discussing his side’s upcoming clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool’s recent title win means that the Spanish coach has now watched his side finish as second best for the third season in a row.
The Gunners narrowly finished behind Manchester City in the last two seasons.
But this year, they are way behind first-placed Liverpool, trailing Arne Slot’s side by 15 points, with three games to play.
Both sides meet at Anfield this weekend, with the game offering Liverpool the chance to continue their impressive head-to-head record against Arsenal and also open up an 18-point lead between them and second place.
But before the game at Anfield, the Gunners are in UEFA Champions League action against PSG.
Arteta’s men were beaten 1-0 by the Parisians in the first leg, but have the chance to overturn the narrow deficit when they travel to Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Speaking about the game in France nd his side’s chances of getting a result that will qualify them for the final, the Arsenal coach made reference to Liverpool’s title win as an example of a team that was ‘in the right moment’ or got simply put, got ‘lucky’.
“Winning trophies is about being in the right moment and in the right place,” he said during his pre-match conference (via Hayters TV).
“Liverpool have won the title with less points than we had in the last two seasons.
“With the points of the last two seasons, we have two Premier League titles?
So you have to be in the right moment and in the right place.
Interestingly, Arsenal have won 84 and 89 points after 38 games in the last two seasons without winning the title.
However, the fact that Liverpool won the title with 82 points does not in any way diminish their achievement or suggest that their current points tally is the highest they will get.
With three games still to play, Liverpool can hit 91 points by the end of the season, the same number of points City won the league with last season, and two more than Arsenal’s total last season.
